About Portraits
The way I paint portraits aligns with my approach to plein air painting. I begin
loose, gesture is important. Often a color is found by seeing its relationship to
the color(s) around it. I try to 'feel' colors. Edges are particularly important. I
strive to see the aura of color that connects (or is made by) 2 adjacent colors.
Some of my portraits are fully from life completed in 2-4 2 hour sessions.
Others (most of my commissions) are begun from a 1 hour sitting and
completed in the studio using photos I take as reference.
